Effect of exogenous orienting and time course of facilitation on vigilance task performance

Abstract

Present study was conducted to examine the effects of different SOAs and cue validity on exogenous orienting during vigilance task performance. Visual vigilance detection task with exogenous spatial location cue was used in which two squares of different sizes were used as target (3.30 cm2) and non-target (3.00 cm2).To orient attention exogenously a star () was presented at both central and peripheral locations. The cue was manipulated as valid, invalid and neutral. A 3 (SOA levels: 200, 450, 800 ms) x 3 (Cue validity: valid, invalid and neutral) x 4 (Time periods: 4 block 10 min. each) mixed factorial design was employed with repeated measure on last two factors. Correct detection of target (hit rates), incorrect detection, false alarm and reaction time (RTs) were recorded for each participant as measure of sustained attention task performance. Perceptual sensitivity (d’) and response criteria (ft) were derived from the percentages of correct detection and incorrect detection for each experimental condition. Although the inhibition of return (IOR) was not found in exogenous orienting but cue validity effect decreased with increasing SOAs during vigilance task. Results indicated that exogenous cue enhanced vigilance task performance and it also benefited the shorter SOA condition.
