Abstract

India's forests cover roughly one-fifth of its land surface. They supply a wide range of products as well as critical environmental services. In a densely populated land, the forest must be utilized to the optimum. India's growing economy faces an increasing fibre supply deficit, and India is a major importer of hardwoods from countries with abysmal records of forest stewardship. Dealing with competing needs poses a monumental set of challenges.
