In the present study, an attempt was made to investigate the effect of cutting parameters on cutting force under different conditions (dry condition, wet and solid lubricant condition) in finish hard turning of AISI 4340 steel. The material with 60HRC was used for experimentation. Its applications have been found in making dies and mould, roller and ball bearings, automobile and aircraft parts. Water based lubricant was used as wet lubricant and boric acid in powder form was used as a solid lubricant. The machining experiments were conducted to understand the relative advantages of different conditions; based on RSM (Response Surface Methodology) and sequential approach using face CCD (Central Composite Design). It was found from experimental results that solid lubricating conditions were effective in bringing down the cutting force.
