Abstract

Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, played a transformative role in the development of the region’s education system during his reign from 1925 to 1947. His efforts focused on making education accessible to all, with a particular emphasis on marginalized communities and women. He established key educational institutions, introduced compulsory primary education, and promoted higher and technical education. Maharaja Hari Singh also implemented scholarships and financial aid programs to support economically disadvantaged students. His progressive reforms in curriculum and examination systems laid a strong foundation for modern education in Jammu and Kashmir, contributing significantly to the socio-economic development of the region.
