An industrially efficient method was developed to synthesize of tiaprofenic acid (5-benzoyl-alpha-methyl-2-thiopheneacetic acid) (1) which is a very important pharmaceutical compound having anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity. Sodium salt of propionitrile is reacted with 5-benzoyl-2bromothiophene (4) to yield nitrile crude (5) and further hydrolysis to give tiaprofenic acid (5-benzoyl-alpha-methyl-2-thiopheneacetic acid) (1).
