Abstract

To isolate the phytoconstituents by column chromatography and characterization of phytoconstituents by using spectroscopic technique.

The petroleum ether extract of leaves and flower of Quisqualis indica were studied for isolation of triterpenoids and methanolic extract for flavonoids and tannins by column chromatography and preparative-thin layer chromatography (P-TLC) and characterized by spectroscopic techniques (UV-visible spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy, 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry).

The Tannins (Gallic acid), flavonoid (Quercetin and Rutin) and Terpenoids (β-sitosterol and Lupeol) were isolated from leaves and flowers of Quisqualis indica and identified with help of preliminary phytochemical methods, physical properties, spectroscopic data and Co-TLC with authentic standards.

The isolation and characterization of compound A, B from petroleum extract and Compound C, D, E from methanolic extract of leaves and flower were the first ever to be reported from this plant the work was carried by means of various physical and spectral techniques.
