Caffeine estimation in Darjeeling District tea samples

Abstract

Caffeine is the world's most widely consumed psychoactive drug, but unlike many other psychoactive substances, it is legal and unregulated in nearly all parts of the world. Psychoactive drug, psychopharmaceutical, or psychotropic is a chemical substance that changes brain function and results in alterations in perception, mood, or consciousness. Caffeine is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant. Caffeine is used to reduce physical fatigue and to prevent or treat drowsiness. Since the amount of caffeine needed depend on individuals’ physiology, it is significant to estimate the quantity of caffeine in natural or synthetic materials that contain caffeine. In this context, a simple and efficient method has been adopted to quantity caffeine on various samples collected from diverse landscapes of the Darjeeling district of West Bengal state, India to comprehend the caffeine quantity. This study reveals that the Darjeeling Green Tea (Sample 4, 2.67% of caffeine) is the best among the tested samples.
