The breakdown of acetylcholine by acetylcholinesterase (AChE) causes loss of acetyl cholinergic phenotypes, leading to altered cognitive functions. Current available AChE inhibitors are reported to be ineffective in treating mild cognitive impairments and associated with higher rates of adverse effects.
