This promising study was performed to study the desired plus the detrimental effects of the medicine, atorvastatin, on liver in patients suffering hyperlipidemia. This work was done relying on volunteering 25 patients, received the medicine, and 15 people with no indications of hyperlipidemia. Blood samples of both groups were subjected to lipid profile; Cholesterol, triglycerides (TG), HDL, and VLDL, plus liver enzyme; alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and alkaline Phosphatase (ALP), evaluation. The results revealed that Cholesterol, TG, and VLDL were significantly (p<0.05) decreased in the patients that used this medicine when compared to the patient group before applying the medicine plus when compared to the control group. Interestingly, HDL indicated a significant (p<0.05) increase in the patients that used this medicine when compared to the patient group before applying the medicine plus when compared to the control group. When studying the liver enzymes, treated patients showed that ALT, AST, and ALP were significantly (p<0.05) higher than the enzyme levels in the control group. This study provides interesting indication that in addition to the useful effects of atorvastatin in correcting the lipid profile of patients with hyperlipidemia, liver enzyme high levels in those treated patients may refer to detrimental effects of this medicine.
