Abstract

IL-1β is one of the specific biological agents responsible for an inflammatory process. This study aims to investigate the effect of both extract Xestospongia sp. and Aaptos sp. in decreasing plasma IL-1β level in the given time. Xestospongia sp. and Aaptos sp. were extracted by 96% ethanol. Each extract was then suspended into distilled water resulting in various concentrations (50; 100; and 200ppm). Rats were induced by 1% carrageenan intraplantar then were divided into groups (n = 5, each group). After being left for 1 hour, animals treated orally by Xestospongia sp. 50 ppm, 100ppm, and 200ppm; Aaptos sp. 50ppm; 100ppm; and 200ppm), vehicle 0.5% NaCMC (as negative control), and diclofenac sodium 3598 ppm (as positive control). Blood collection was conducted 2 and 3 hours post-treated, then were analyzed by using the ELISA kit. The result showed that Xestospongia sp. 100 and 200ppm and Aaptos sp. were decreasing plasma IL-1β levels at 2 and 3-hour of measurement (p<0.05). In conclusion, both Xestopongia sp. and Aaptos sp. have biological activity as anti-inflammatory agents by decreasing plasma IL-1β levels.
