Abstract

In the present study, comparative analysis to study the effect of natural and synthetic permeation enhancers on the transdermal delivery of Ethinylestradiol and Medroxyprogesterone acetate drugs in combination with different polymers, plasticizers and different categories of permeation enhancers has been analyzed.

The transdermal patches were prepared by solvent casting technique. Different formulation with varying concentration of polymers, plasticizers and permeation enhancers were prepared. The drug polymer interaction study was conducted using DSC. In vitro permeation studies were conducted using Franz diffusion cell.

The release profiles obtained by in vitro drug release from natural and synthetic permeation enhancers were compared. The permeability coefficient was found in the range of 6.20 to 8.53 cm/h, and corresponding flux was found between 382.58 to 847.39 μg/cm2

It was concluded that transdermal patches containing cineol as permeation enhancer was found to have maximum drug release and hence, better bioavailability. This high release can be contributed to high permeability coefficient and high flux.
