Abstract

The aim of the present study was to investigate the phytochemical constituents, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic and antimicrobial activity of brakish water growing medicinal mangrove plant Bruguiera gymnorhiza L. The preliminary screening confirms that the plants having tannin, flavonoids, phenolic compounds, alkaloid, anthraquinon, terpenoids and steroids. The quantitative analysis confirms that the phenolic compounds were found to be high in methaniolic extract (26.49mg/gram) whereas flavonoid content was found to be very high in aqueous extract (45.2mg/gram). The IC 50 of methanol extract was found to be 52.75μg/mL, 100.38μg/mL and 120.50μg/mL for DPPH scavenging activity, antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory activities respectively. All the extracts were found to be effectively inhibit the growth of pathogenic (S.aureus, B.subtilis, P. aeruginosa and S. typhi) studied. Thus the obtained results indicate that the extracts of the tested mangrove grown plant Bruguiera gymnorhiza could be used which can be explored as natural medicines for the promotion of health.
