Antioxidant, Antibacterial activities, GCMS and FTIR Analysis of Ethanol bark extract of Capparis sepiaria L.
Abstract
Capparis is a genus distributed in many parts of the world, with its many species showing varieties of medicinal properties. The medicinal uses of Capparis sepiaria are well known and scientific validation is insufficient Capparis sepiaria L., belonging to the family Capparaceae is a thorny much branched shrub traditionally used for the treatment of Jaundice, Inflammation, and Dysentery. The maximum DPPH. radical and superoxide (O2.-) radical scavenging activities of ethanol bark extract of Capparis sepiaria were 48.88±0.16% and 80.85±0.29% at 120 μg/mL concentration. The IC50 values of DPPH. radical and superoxide (O2.-) radical scavenging activities were 122.74 μg/mL and 65.28 μg/mL concentration respectively. The maximum Mo6+ reduction and Fe3+ reduction of ethanol bark extract of Capparis sepiaria were 58.45±0.13% and 76.50±0.25% at 120 μg/mL concentration and the RC50 values of Mo6+ reduction and Fe3+ reduction were 87.87 μg/mL and 67.29 μg/mL concentration respectively. Presence of active compounds in the ethanol bark extract was confirmed by chromatographic analysis. Tetradecanoic acid, 1H-Purine-2, 6-dione, 3, 7-dihydro-7-(4-tert-butylbenzyl)-1, 3-dimethyl-, Phenol, 2, 6-bis(1, 1-dimethylethyl)-4-[(4-hydroxy-3, 5-dimethylphenyl)methyl]-were the major phytochemical molecules detected by Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry analysis exhibiting significant pharmacological activities. The FTIR analysis of ethanol bark extract of Capparis sepiaria showed the presence of eighteen bands with various functional groups such as amines, esters and aromatic compounds.
