To evaluate the cardioprotective effect of hydroalcoholic extract of Matricaria chamomilla linn in isoproterenol induced myocardial infarction in wistar rats

Abstract

The main objective behind this examination was to observe that if chamomile is capable of hindering plasma CK-MB activity, ameliorated ISO-induced myocardial damage. The flower extract of Chamomile was extracted with the help of ethanol and water in the ratio of 70:30 by utilizing soxhlet apparatus. Healthy animals were utilized and were given the dose of 100-200mg/kg with isoproterenol. The outcomes revealed that there was significant ST-fragment elevation in isoproterenol-treated rats, however pre-treatment with chamomile extract markedly restrained isoproterenol-induced ST-portion elevation interesting of its cell membrane protecting effects. Myocardium contains an abundant amount of diagnostic marker compounds for MI and once metabolically damaged, it releases its intracellular contents into the ECF. Hence, the serum levels of those marker chemicals reflect the alterations in membrane honesty and/or permeability. Pre-treatment with chamomile extract (100 and 200mg/kg, respectively) significantly lowered the isoproterenol-induced elevation of serum levels of these diagnostic marker proteins. Oral administration of chamomile extract significantly reduces the activity of CK and LDH in heart and also ameliorates the oxidative pressure, accordingly reducing cardio toxicity. In ISO administered rats, the activity of heart tissue antioxidant proteins was found to be decreased when compared to control rats. The preliminary histopathological discoveries of the isoproterenol induced myocardium showed large infracted zone with oedema, coagulative necrosis and inflammatory cells and separation of cardiac muscle strands. It can be concluded that chamomile extract considerably improved cellular antioxidative defence against oxidative pressure; it may work as a preventive antioxidant by scavenging superoxide anions, or a chain breaking antioxidant by scavenging lipid free radicals.
