To formulate an herbal Local Drug Delivery agent in the form of a gel using Achyranthes aspera root powder and to test is antimicrobial efficacy against the periodontal pathogens namely A. actinomycetemcomitans and P. gingivalis.
Achyranthes aspera, Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Anti-Microbial Activity, Local Drug Delivery, Porphyromonas gingivalis.
The plant root powder is firstly used to prepare an extract to test its antimicrobial activity via MIC and MBC tests. Then, further evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of the LDD gel prepared using Achyranthes aspera root powder was done.
The results manifested the MIC against A. actinomycetemcomitans to be 25μl/ml and for P. gingivalis MIC to be 50μl/ml and MBC for both to be 50μl/ml.
The antimicrobial efficiency of the preparation has been established proving it to be efficacious agains the two main periodontal pathogens.
The plant extract can be utilized as an herbal alternative to the commercially available antibiotics.
