Phytochemical Investigation by GC-MS and Antimicrobial Activities of Boswellia carterii Extract by Accelerated Solvent Extraction

Abstract

Boswellia carterii is a yellowish substance extracted from the cuttings of Boswellia sp. Plant, it is found in several parts of the world. Boswellia Carterrii has been traditionally used for the treatment of several inflammatory diseases, and bacterial resistance to antibiotics has recently increased the use of bioproducts.

The chemical investigation and assesses the antibacterial effect of the ASE extracts of the Boswellia carterii on 7 pathogenic bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp, Staphylococcus saprophytoculis, Staphylococcus epedrmidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii).

Accelerated solvent extraction (ASE) was used for the first time to extract nonvolatile and volatile compounds from Boswellia carterii samples using three extractions solvents: n-Hexane, Dichloromethane (DCM), Methanol (MeOH), while gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) and headspace were used to study the components in the extracts.

Different compounds including mono-, sesqui- and di-terpenic compositions, were identified by GC-MS in the ASE extracts of Boswellia carterii that could have antibacterial effects on the studied strains.

The different ASE extracts of the Boswellia carterii showed antibacterial effects and a positive impact on the phagocytic ratio of different studied strains.
