A study on efficacy of vitamin-D supplementation at different classes of heart failure in patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction

Abstract

Heart failure develops when your heart can't pump enough blood required by the body needs and the severity can be measured by LVEF, and its low levels indicate high chances of stroke. Few studies suggest that Vitamin-D can elevate LVEF.

To evaluate whether vitamin-D efficacy varies depending on the NYHA functional classification of heart failure and to determine the effect of vitamin-D on left ventricular ejection fraction improvement in heart failure patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction.

This is a prospective randomised control study conducted for 6months, 120 patients were recruited based on NYHA functional classification and divided into two groups (Group-A: Receiving Vitamin-D 2000 IU daily for 4months and Group-B: without Vitamin-D supplementation) and their Left Ventricular Ejection Fraction values were recorded on monthly reviews. Student’s t-test and repeated measures of NOVA tools were used in SPSS for the analysis.

Mean Difference for the measure of LVEF from 1st review visit to 4th review was analysed - in Severe LV dysfunction: Experiment group has [-2.100] whereas in Control group [-.050], In Moderate LV dysfunction: Experiment group has [-3.650] and in Control group is [-.550], In Mild LV dysfunction: in Experiment group has [-2.650] while in Control group is [-1.000]. The P values in all three class of Experiment groups showed significant change while in Control groups showed less or negligible change.

The results of our study showed that Vitamin-D showed more efficacy on Moderate LV dysfunction patients compared to Mild LV dysfunction and showed very less effect on Severe LV dysfunction patients it also proved that Vitamin-D supplements can improve Ejection Fraction in Vitamin-D deficient patients.
