Endometrial carcinoma is the most common gynecological cancer. The number of new cases is increasing worldwide day by day. Increases in malignancy have encourages researches to develop new treatment modalities for this cancer. Severe side effects and limitations in the therapeutic efficiency of conventional cancer treatments have led to the widespread use of complementary and alternative medicines. Among the various treatment modalities, traditional medicines with demonstrable anti-cancer activity are the preferred choice. Borassus flabellifer Linn. is a traditional herb. Each and every part of plant shows different types of pharmacological actions, flowers are used in the treatment of the diabetes, very useful for bilious affections, enlarged liver, spleen, act as cooling and used in uterus tumors. However, the anti-proliferative activity in endometrial cancer cells has yet to be not elucidated. This study investigated the anticancer effects of various extract of, Borassus flabellifer Linn. flowers on Ishikawa cells. The flowers of Borassus flabellifer Linn. were collected from Pune district. Authenticated at Botanical Survey of Pune. The extraction was performed using the Soxhlet device with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, chloroform and hydro-alcoholic solvent. Flowers were also extracted by cold maceration. Preliminary phytochemical investigation revels extract contains carbohydrates, proteins, steroids, triterpenoids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins and phenolic compounds. The in vitro anticancer study was performed on Ishikawa cell line with sulforhodamine B assay in TATA Memorial, ACTREC Mumbai as per National Cancer Institute guidelines. The present experiment was repeated thrice and then average percentage of control growth was calculated and compared. In in- vitro experiment the average value of GI50-80 μg/mL in case of (EA) Ethyl acetate extract of Borassus flabellifer Linn. Flowers was 61.9 while in case of pure compound, the average value of GI50-80 μg/mL was -35.1. Our results demonstrate that Borassus flabellifer Linn. Flowers extracts inhibits the growth of cancer cells which suggests the potential applicability of Borassus flabellifer Linn. Flowersas an anticancer agent.
