Genus Amaranthus L. is an important member of pseudo-cereals which comprises 70 species, distributed in tropical and temperate countries. It has been a staple food grain during many civilizations. However, its nutritional values and agronomic potential came into notice in the 1980s. The species of Amaranthus encompasses different phytoconstituents which have many medicinal importance. Different species of this genus have been widely used in the Indian and Chinese systems of traditional medicine for decades.
