The design of gastro-retentive floating tablets increases gastric residence time, enhancing the solubility and bioavailability of poorly soluble drugs while enabling prolonged drug release.
The aim of the present study was to formulate Silymarin floating tablets capable of withstanding stomach acidity and providing sustained drug release.
Silymarin gastro-retentive floating tablets were prepared and evaluated for preformulation parameters, in vitro buoyancy, drug content, and in vitro drug release.
All formulations exhibited acceptable preformulation characteristics. The formulation containing HPMC K100 (S6) was identified as the optimized formulation, achieving 99.43% drug release over 12 hours.
The optimized formulation (S6) demonstrated effective buoyancy with a floating lag time of less than 30 seconds and sustained drug release for over 12 hours, making it a promising candidate for gastro-retentive drug delivery.
