Bunium persicum, locally known as Black Cumin. It is a medicinal plant with remedy to many diseases. This work therefore seeks to determine the in vitro antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory potentials of plant extracts from Bunium persicum to establish their rationality. α-Amylase inhibitory assay, Glucose Uptake assay and Estimation of Glucose by Yeast Cells studies were conducted to determine the ability of the compound to control post cataract glucose levels. Moreover, the anti-inflammatory potential was also assessed using protein precipitation, nitric oxide quenching, and hemolysis inhibition methods and it was found that the extracts suppressed the inflammatory biomarkers dose-dependently. It was also revealed that tested plant contains the flavonoids , phenolic acids, tannins, and alkaloids which were reported to possess antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory properties. This extract displayed low IC50 values in both the enzyme inhibition and anti-inflammatory assays, which is on par with standard drugs; thereby being a good candidate to natural suppressor for diabetes and inflammation. Therefore, the outcomes of this study stress the pharmacological importance of pharmacologically active compounds from Bunium persicum as potential sources of plant-derived therapeutic agents. More investigations using in vivo models and clinical trials are suggested to confirm its therapeutic effects, as well as it side effects when used as a pharmacological agent.
