This case report details a rare occurrence of pressure ulcers following anesthesia, emphasizing the novelty of the association. It highlights the importance of recognizing anesthesia-induced pressure sores to improve patient outcomes through preventive strategies.
A 28-year-old male developed pressure ulcers after undergoing a laparoscopic appendectomy for acute bacterial appendicitis. Despite stable intraoperative hemodynamic parameters and a successful surgery, the patient experienced post-operative complications, including leg immobility and right heel blisters, which progressed into severe pressure necrosis. The Naranjo Causality Assessment Scale identified lidocaine as the probable cause of the pressure ulcers. Prolonged immobility and the anesthetic effects of lidocaine likely contributed to impaired skin perfusion. The patient's normal Body Mass Index ruled out obesity as a contributing factor.
This case highlights the critical need for early recognition and management of pressure sores in the post-operative period. Preventive measures during and after surgery are essential to mitigate anesthesia-induced pressure sores, calling for greater awareness and vigilance among anesthesiologists.
