Abstract

An enteric coating is a barrier applied to oral medication that controls the location in the digestive system where it is absorbed. Enteric refers to the small intestine; therefore enteric coatings prevent release of medication before it reaches the small intestine. Enteric polymers are insoluble in the acidic medium but they will dissolve in the higher pH (above pH 5.5). The concentrations of coating solution affect the coating membrane formation. The 3% (g/100ml) coating solution was chosen as the coating solution. The different coating equipments are centrifugal granulator, fluidized bed, tablet-coating machine, Vector Corporation, O'Hara technologies, SUPERCELL™ Tablet Coater. Microencapsulation techniques also used for preparation of multiple unit dosage form, in addition there are different coating systems which coat the core material and release drug in intestine. Coating is an art and it should be performed by experienced person otherwise different problems may occur (twinning, peeling and frosting, orange peel etc.).
