Development of Ophthalmic In Situ Gelling Formulation of Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride Using Gellan Gum
Abstract
Gellan gum, a cation sensitive polysaccharide was used in the preparation of ophthalmic in situ gelling formulation of Ciprofloxacin hydrochloride. The formulation prepared with optimized amount of gellan gum, which upon physiologically relevant concentration of sodium ions, exhibited instantaneous sol to gel transition. The formulation in gel form showed almost complete release of drug over the period 8 of hours. The formulation when subjected to accelerated stability studies showed good physical and chemical stability.
