Abstract

In the present study, the ethyl acetate and ethanolic extracts from the flowers of Ixora javanica were studied against CCl4-induced hepatotoxicity in rats.

Ethyl acetate and ethanolic extracts at a dose of 200 and 400 mg/Kg body weight, p. o. offered significant (P<0.001) hepatoptrotective action by reducing the serum marker enzymes like SGPT, SGOT, ALP, biliribin and cholesterol in test doses which was comparable with that of the standard silymarin. The ethyl acetate and ethanolic extract was able to restore the biochemical levels to normal which were altered due to CCl4 intoxication in freshly isolated rat hepatocytes and also in animals.

The results indicate that Ixora javanica flowers could be useful in preventing chemically induced acute liver injury.
