Phytochemical Composition, Antimicrobial, Hemolytic activity and HPLC analysis of Ethanolic Extract of Cleome viscosa Linn. Stems

Abstract

The current investigation was aimed to evaluate phytochemical composition, antimicrobial and hemolytic activity of ethanolic extracts of Cleome viscosa Linn. stems. Antimicrobial activity was performed by agar well diffusion method against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas fluorescence, Klebsiella pneumonia and Escherichia coli followed by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) by tube dilution method. The extract was tested for the qualitative and quantitative estimation of phytochemical compounds. Hemolytic activity was carried out by spectroscopic method. To know the class of the phytochemical compounds present within the extract, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) analysis was performed. The extract has shown maximum zone of inhibition (18mm) at 200μgmL-1 concentration against S. aureus with MIC 100μgmL-1. Preliminary phytochemical screening resulted in the presence of alkaloids, flavanoids, carbohydrates and absence of sterols, saponins, oils and fats. Quantitative analysis of total phenolics and flavanoids has shown higher amount of phenols and flavanoids. Ethanolic extract exhibited low hemolytic activity, so it is safe for the human erythrocytes. HPLC analysis detected the presence of Myricetin, Kaemferol-7-O-neohesperidoside, Galacatechin, Gallic acid, Protocatechuic acid and β-resorcylic acid. Based on the results of the present study, it can be concluded that the ethanolic extract of C. viscosa exhibited efficient antimicrobial activity and further can be used for the isolation of antimicrobial compounds.
