Evaluation of Antistress Activity of Vitis vinifera and Chicorium intybus

Abstract

Vitis vinifera and Chicorium intybus are medicinal plants traditionally used in the treatment of many diseases and disorders in India. In the present study thier antistress activity have been investigated. The ethanolic extracts of Vitis vinifera seed and Chicorium intybus roots, at the doses of 250 and 500mg/kg Body weight for both the extracts were tested for antistress activity. Chronic stress induced lipid peroxidation was evaluated by measuring the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substance(MDA level) in brain of albino rats. Cold and restraint stress model was selected as it combines both emotional and physical components of stress. The cold and restraint stress induced an elevation of MDA level in stress control group as compared to the normal control group. Pre treatment with Vitis vinifera seed and Chicorium intybus roots extracts were able to inhibit the elevation of MDA level due to stress in rat's brain. The inhibition of brain lipid peroxidation by both the extracts were found to be highly significant (p<0.001) at the selected doses and was comparable to the standard drug. On the basis of results it was concluded that Vitis vinifera and Chicorium intybus possess potential antistress activity.
