Halitosis is a universal misfortune suffered by many people irrespective of age, sex, and social status. It is estimated to be the third most frequent reason for seeking dental aid, following tooth decay and periodontal disease. Patients with halitosis may seek treatment from dental clinicians for their perceived oral malodour. More than 90% of cases of halitosis originate from the oral cavity. Other causes of halitosis include impacted food debri in the mouth, improper hygiene maintenance, xerostomia, carious lesions, infections in the oral cavity, tongue coatings, tobacco consumption, underlying systemic causes, etc… Treatment is aimed mainly based on the identification of the cause. This short review describes the various etiological factors, classification, examination and the treatment and prevention methods in order to get maximum therapeutic relief from halitosis.
