A Quasi-Experimental Study to Assess the Effect of Video Assisted Teaching Module Regarding Tracheostomy Care on Knowledge and Skill of Staff Nurses at Vinayaka Mission Hospital, Salem, Tamilnadu.

Abstract

A quasi experimental design with pre and post-test without control group and experimental approach was undertaken in Vinayaka Mission Hospital, Salem. Data were collected from 50 staff nurses to assess the effectiveness of video assisted teaching module on tracheostomy care and analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that most of the staff nurses (86%) were in the age group of 21–25 years, 68% were females, majority (78%) had GNM qualification, 60% were working in ICU, majority (58%) had less than one year of experience, 62% had previous exposure to tracheostomy care through books, 72% had attended in-service education on tracheostomy care.

Overall post-test mean score was 23.58 ± 2.21 which was 78.6% of the total score, revealed good knowledge of staff nurses. The difference in mean percentage between pre and post-test was around 27.4% shows that video assisted teaching module was effective in improving the knowledge of staff nurses regarding tracheostomy care. Overall post-test mean skill score was 26 ± 3.38 which was 74.28% of the total score revealing good performance of staff nurses on tracheostomy care. The difference in mean percentage between pre and post-test was around 24.8% shows that video assisted teaching module was effective in improving the skill of staff nurses in performing tracheostomy care. The paired ‘t’ test was calculated and found that there was highly significant difference between pre and post-test knowledge and skill scores. Chi-square test shows that there was no significant association between the knowledge and skill scores with the demographic variables. Karl Pearson's coefficient of correlation analysis between knowledge and skill (r = 0.42) shows significant relation, which reveals that when knowledge level increases, the skill also will increase.
