Development and characterization of karanj oil based proniosomal gel for topical delivery
Abstract
Niosomes are non-ionic surfactant vesicles which act as drug carrier system for topical delivery. In the present study, we carried preparation and evaluation of proniosomal gel of karanj oil (Derris indica family -Fabaceae). Karanj oil is traditionally used for the treatment of eczema, leprosy and some common skin infection. The proniosomal gel was prepared by slurry method using span 40, soya lecithin and cholesterol, using karanj oil as the active pharmaceutical ingredients. Alcohol and phosphate buffer pH 7.4 were used in formulation as pharmaceutical excipients. The resulting formulations were evaluated and observed by transmission electron microscopy. Evaluation of formulation confirmed the optimum result like uniform size distribution (150nm-330nm), drug entrapment (70–75%) and antimicrobial property. It can be concluded that it is visible to prepare an acceptable proniosomal gel of karanj oil for therapeutic application.
