Abstract

1) To evaluate serum lipid profile in patients with oral cancer.

2) To assess whether the levels of serum lipid profile alter during the pathogenesis of oral cancer.

3) To assess such altered levels of serum lipid can be used as biochemical markers for oral cancer conditions.

Lipid plays an major role to maintain the cell integrity because lipids are major components of cell membrane. In malignancy, the newly proliferating tumour cells require increased levels of lipids for their synthesis which cause diminish of existing lipid stores so the changes in lipid profile have been associated with cancer. Hypocholesterolemia have been observed in patients with cancer. Hence, the lower plasma lipid status may be useful indicator to detect the initial changes seen in neoplastic process.
