Vivipary: A rare phenomenon in papaya (Carica papaya L.)

Abstract

Papaya is a commercial fruit crops of the India, a lot of imrpovemnt and productivity enhancemnt work is going on in various institute at different location. Both green and ripe papaya are well known for their nutracetical attributes for human well being. Unlike other fruit crops, papaya is primarly propagated by seeds. While investigating on development of early maturing genotypes of papaya, we observed vivipary in late maturing papaya genotypes namely, RCTP-1, P-7-9 and P-9-5, during monsoon season. The breeders can shorten the papaya breeding cycle by exploiting viviapary phenomenon.
