Abstract

Sugarcane breeding program aims to produce new sugarcane cultivars that are superior in some quality aspects to cultivars currently in use. In order to identify superior genotypes, this work compared the seedling ratoons by the traditional mass selection with two methods, which takes into account BLUP (Best Linear Unbiesed Prediction) of the family obtained in plant cane: (a) Australian Sequential Selection (BLUPseq) and (b) Sequential Selection by Relative Merit (BLUPrel). A total of 65 families were used from 2014 crosses series of the sugarcane breeding program, in two replications in a complete randomized block design. Tests were conducted in Ribeirão Preto-SP, Brasil. For selection, Tons of Pol per Hectare (TPH) was calculated in plant cane, as the main parameter for rank the families. As a criterion, the number of individuals selected in each method was the same, 168 individuals marked from the mass selection, the first applied method. The mass selection provided the highest number of promising genotypes with a mean of 16.19 TPH. BLUPseq was found an efficient method to identify superior sugarcane genotypes.
