Abstract

Phyllanthus niruri Linn. (Syn P. amarus Schum & Thonn) is a small monoecious tropical herb with long-standing place in Ayurvedic as well as Chinese and Malay ethnomedical literature. It grows in the wild habitat of several Indian states following first monsoon showers, and also observed to grow abundantly in coastal locations. The herbaceous plant parts contain several active biochemicals like flavonoids, terpenes, coumarins, lignans and some alkaloids that have their potent role in traditional medicine for various ailments. It’s known for its potential activity to support liver health, manage kidney stones, and exhibit antiviral and antibacterial properties. It’s also been explored for its potential anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects. Several commercial products have been available in the market for therapeutic use. While P. niruri has a long history of traditional use, more scientific research is needed to fully validate its effectiveness and safety for all claimed uses.
