Abstract

In recent years, coral reefs and coral health are severely damaged due to the effect of global climate change. Coral bleaching is one of the most important threats to corals. Corals can cope with natural and anthropogenic stressors either through resistance mechanism by coral host or through sustainable relationship with Symbiodinium clades or types, but many corals cannot. The knowledge on the genetic diversity and specific gene expressions of coral symbionts in the genus Symbiodinium spp is important to understand how coral reefs will respond to global climate change. This review summarised the earlier attempt to find out the genetic variation in coral hosts with their environmental stress, genomic composition of Symbiodinium types and candidate genes to study coral reef resilience.
