Abstract

Acne is a very common skin condition which mostly affects adolescent group. Acne is the disease of pilosebaceous unit which is recognized by the symptoms like cysts, papules, and comedone. Microsponge is an exquisite dosage form as it gives controlled release and is non-irritant. To address skin irritation associated with conventional acne treatment, this study aims to formulate the salicylic acid microsponge gel with systematic controlled release for treating acne using different polymers. The microsponges were prepared using quasi emulsion solvent diffusion method. The resulting three microsponges made up of ethyl cellulose, eudragit RS-100 and eudragit RL-100 respectively were added to carbopol 934 gels. The prepared microsponge gel was evaluated for its physico-chemical properties like viscosity, spreadability, antibacterial characteristics and Invitro diffusion studies. Evaluation of formulated gel showed good results. The eudragit RL-100 exhibited comparatively higher entrapment efficiency of 67.64µg/ml and a maintained drug release profile. The formulated microsponge gel have clear base with very tiny particles which on rubbing are designed to release the drug. Thus the microsponge gel prepared serves as a beautiful formulation option for acne treatment with controlled release.
