The purpose of education is to ensure that every student gain access to knowledge, skills and information that will prepare them to contribute to society and their workplace. Elementary education in India therefore is the foundation on which the development of every citizen and the nation as a whole hinges. The government has made elementary education free but the aim of universalization of elementary education is still a dream to come true. Therefore some innovative ways are introduced by the Govt. from time to time to achieve this goal. The Right to Education Act, came into force on 1st April, 2010 after 62 years of independence, has made free and compulsory education a fundamental right of every child in the 6 to 14 age group. The present paper aims to outline salient features of the Act, throw light on the challenges ahead and suggest ways to overcome them.
