Abstract

Business Development Information system (BDIS) is a computerised system which provides an organised flow of information to enable and support the Business Development (BD) activities of an organisation. The BD function has become the firm's window to the world which monitors change in buyer behavior, competition, technology, economic conditions, and government policies. BDIS provides the information technology as a backbone for the organisation's strategic business operations. BDIS encompasses a broad spectrum of activities from simple transaction processing to a complex decision making.

In the current work, existing BDIS in the BD department of a chosen company has been studied and analysed using flow chart, Data Flow Diagram (DFD) and Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD). Structured System Analysis and Design Methodology (SSADM) has been used to design and develop an effective BDIS along with VB. Net as front end programming language and SQL Server 2008 R2 as backend database. The customer information data, marketing information data and sales information data has been stored in BDIS database. In order to streamline the process at BD department, an automated BDIS has been designed and developed by using data entry forms like customer, campaign and lead details. Various reports like customer wise, employee wise, date wise, category wise and prospect wise has been generated using crystal reports.

Database has been collated with existing information and performance has been tested against the existing system. It has been observed that input of data into the system and report generation required about 60% of less time compared to the existing system. The developed BDIS will help the organisation in the maintenance of the customer data more accurately and data will be more secured with features of security. The study can be extended in the area of accounts and projects department. Further, it can be integrated with human resource information system and accounting information system.
