Abstract

The body of work chosen is to design and develop a low cost Room air purifier for Indian middle class homes focusing on frugality, aesthetics and hygiene. The product is meant to be used by customers of all ages at their homes and residences. Air pollution is one of the leading cause of concern for ill health across the world. Outdoor air pollution is not only corrupting the environment and globally warming the planet but also affecting human in more possible ways than we can imagine. Indoor air purifiers does a good job in cleaning up this air but the concept of indoor air purification hasn't caught up much in India even though we need it the most. The air purifier market, in India is still nascent and sellers are not making any head way in selling their products. So the quest for the perfect air purifier that people would be more than willing to buy lead me to take up this project. Clean air inside your home reduces a high percentage of risk on bad health and suffering in the long run. It is time that people realized this and took precautions. The approach to provide a viable solution began by accumulating and studying data on the subject, the markets, technologies used, manufacturing processes, competition studies etc. Ethnographic studies and Voice of the customer feedback were analysed. Concepts were created and screened for selection. The superior concept was further developed and prototyped. Test and validation were done and a scale plan was devised. The product uses state of the art filters to clean the air and provides cool breeze to the users. A high efficiency particulate arrestance filters contaminants up to PM2.5 and a Corrugated Activated Charcoal filter traps gases odour and smoke. The system continuously monitors dust particles and gives the user a clear count through a large display with safe and unsafe air quality levels. High speed blowers blow clean air into the room.
