Trains are one of the basic modes of transport in India. To carry personal belongings, accompanying luggage is essential for any train journey. More comfortable the travellers are in carrying the piece of luggage, more comfortable are their journeys. Suitcase plays an important role in carrying luggage during a train journey. A user-friendly suitcase helps in making any train journey comfortable.
The aim of this project is to improve the functionality, usability and aesthetics of suitcase for Indian rail journey. The project began with product study. A market survey was conducted to study the details of suitcases available in the market. Next a user survey was carried out to get a clear picture about the user environment and the aspirations of the users. With all the survey details, the present problem areas and improvements required were identified. These inputs were used to prepare QFD matrix and evolve product design specifications
Concepts to meet the product design specifications were generated through sketching, 2D renderings using Coral Draw and 3D modelling using Pro-E. The short listed concepts were refined in order to improve aesthetics, functionality, usability and ease of manufacturing. The final concept was selected and detailed in Pro-E, and a prototype was made for visualisation.. Detailed drawings were made for manufacturing.
