Right to Information: A Weapon Against Corruption’s Wall

Associate Professor, Symbiosis Law School, Noida, Symbiosis International (Deemed University), Pune, Maharashtra, India

Abstract

Information is regarded as a tool that enables people to act more meaningfully since informed people will be more vigilant, and the democratic process will be more alive in a democracy where the people are the true sovereigns. The government is viewed as merely the servant of the master, with the ordinary people as the true sovereign or master. The servant works for their master, making smart decisions for them and educating them about the policies required for democratic governance. One of the main reasons why corruption pervades the nation practically at all levels is because regular people are kept ignorant of the policies. Breaking the wall of secrecy is necessary to establish openness and transparency in good governance. In order to give all of its residents a chance to communicate with the government, India has passed the Right to Information Act of 2005. This Act is regarded as a powerful instrument and weapon to break down the barriers of secrecy, abuse of authority, arbitrary decision-making, and corruption. The goal of the current study is to consider the main corruption indicators and how the Right to Information Act of 2005 might be used to break down the corruption barrier.
