Humans need a wide range of nutrients to lead a healthy and active life. Good health is a livelihood asset that enables people to participate in work and socioeconomic development. Illness, on the other hand, causes misery and impoverishment. Odisha occupies 19th rank in Human Development Index in the year 2011 as compared to 11th position in the year 2001. Reduction of inter-regional and inter-personal disparities is also a key concern that has considerably informed the human development debate..
The present research focuses on macro level study of infrastructural deficiencies in health sector of Odisha. Average rural area covered by Primary Health care Institutions, total number of beds, population covered under one health Institute (in ‘000), number of Health Institutions per lakh poplation, percentages of live births where the mother delivery either receives the medical attention at Government or at the private hospitals in Odisha, percentages of Deaths where medical attention received at Government or private hospitals, staffing pattern deficiencies etc., are the major causes of infrastructural deficiencies in health sector of Odisha. These regions also bear the brunt of a resource crunch both in terms of a health budget deficit and neglected public health institutions. Institutional deliveries are lower in case of tribal women. Low female literacy rate adversely impact reproductive child health care in tribal and other interior areas. Health awareness, provisioning of hospital facilities at birth and death should be the moral duty of the government.
