Abstract

Agriculture is a state subject it is the responsibility of respective State Governments to take requisite steps for reforming agricultural marketing structure to move further ahead for the nurture of agricultural sector. The marketing of agricultural produce is a big challenge these days for the economic viability of the farmers due to the era of liberalization. In this concern the study analyse the regulated agricultural market intensely intended to cut the role of intermediaries, there are multiple intermediaries between the farmer and the consumer, and as a result consumers pay high prices for agricultural commodities while farmers get meagre returns. Here in this paper examine history of regulated market in Tamil Nadu and extend its analyse the number of regulated markets functioning in India which spread throughout the states as well as it examine the number of regulated markets requirement for the each state. Further the paper narrow down toward the number the regulated markets functioning in the Tamil Nadu state and analyse the required number of markets to be established based on the recommendation of National Farmers Commission (2004) that a regulated market should be available to farmers within a radius of 5 Km (corresponding market area of about 80 sq. km.) (GoI, 2013).
