Abstract

This paper which draws from the literature, seeks to generate knowledge and understanding on the role and impact of the new Government of India in Tanzania, an East African and low-income nation. The paper argues that the greatest impact of BRICS and the New Government of India on Africa will emanate through three key channels: development assistance (aid), trade and investment. The most striking finding to emerge from this paper is that Tanzania's engagement with India is characterized by both significant strengths and some lurking weaknesses. The paper concludes that for India to be recognised as “a solution partner” to Tanzania socio-economic challenges in the spirit of South-South cooperation, it is imperative that Tanzanians should be made aware that BRICS (and for that matter any other foreign country) will not transform Tanzania: Tanzanians will transform Tanzania!
