Relationship between hopelessness and depression among Kalaburagi city college students

Abstract

The current study was intended to examine the difference in hopelessness and depression on demographic variables such as gender (male and female), course of study (science and arts) and locality (urban and rural). Further, relationship between hoplessness and depression are also assessed. 171 college student of Kalaburagi city were selected by a random sampling method (lottery method). The data were collected using personal data sheet, beck depression inventory and beck hopelessness inventory. Descriptive Statistics and non-parametric statistics as Mann-Witney test (U) and chi-square test (?2) were used to analyze the data. The results could not find significant difference on depression among male and female college students, but findings showed that there is a significant difference on depression among science & arts, as well as rural & urban. The findings also showed that there isn't a significant difference on hopelessness among males & females, science & arts and urban & rural college students. The results also show that there is no significant association between hopelessness and depression.
