In any institution of higher learning, one of the most important stakeholders is teachers and the satisfaction or dissatisfaction of teachers, irrespective of their rank, often dictates the quality of teaching - learning activities in the institution. Teachers working in universities funded by the Government may play a catalytic role if they are motivated properly both by monetary as well as non-monetary benefits and facilities which, in turn, may make them proactive and productive and thus helps the university to cater to the needs of the society in general and students community in particular. It cannot be denied that the higher educational institutions funded by the Government depend to a large extent upon the voluntary performance of teachers which is probably possible when the institutions has its disposal a good number of teachers contended with different facets of their job. The present study aims to analyze the degree of job satisfaction of teachers working in the rank of Assistant Professors and Associate Professors in Assam University which is one of the Central University of North Eastern Region of India located in South Assam. In order to conduct the study, responses of the teachers over twenty-two (22) components of job categorized into five factors have been considered. The data obtained through field survey have been analyzed by using mean, standard deviation and independent two samples t test. The study concludes that out of five factors considered in the study, teachers of Assam University are satisfied with ‘Pay and Allowance’ and ‘Relationship with Employees’ only.
