Empowerment is a multi-faced- multi dimensional and multi layered concept. Women are the mother of the race and the liaison between generation. Our Indian culture attaches much importance to this section of the society therefore; India has been symbolized as mother India. “Women plays an important role as human infrastructure and their empowerment - economic, social, educational and political would hasten the pace of social development. Improving in women's capabilities and empowering them to achieve their” choice and “opportunities” is the surest way to contribute to economic growth and over all development. The objective of this paper is to explore the ideas that, if self-help is the best help then self-employment is the best employment for empowering women. There is no denying the fact that women inIndia have made considerable progress in almost seven decades of Independence, but they still have to struggle against many handicaps and social evils in the male-dominated society. There has been amelioration in the position of women but their true empowerment is still awaited. One of the greatest sons of India, Swami Vivekananda quoted that “There is no chance for the welfare of the world unless the condition of women is improved, it is not possible for a bird to fly on only one wing.” The article attempts to grapple with the few challenges faced by the women in India like dowry, female forticide, denial ofinheritance right and trafficking of girls etc. The main objective of the paper is to evolve strategies to empower women uniformly like the men.
