Geographical location of ports in North Orissa during the colonial era

Abstract

The European Factory Records, Balasore Custom House Reports, the Accounts and Diaries of European travelers and agents provide valuable information regarding the ports of northern Orissa. The coastline of northern Orissa starts from the port of Subarnarekha to Puri. It was a thriving centre of trade and commerce during the colonial era. Those ports were the Subarnarekha, Sartha, Chhanoa, Balasore, Laichhanpur, Churamoan, Dhamra, Chandballi, False Point, and Puri .False Point Port was situated by the River Mahanadi .It was developed after the famine of 1866. The port of Balasore was situated by the River Burabalnga. The Port of Dhamra was developed after 1866. The port of Chandballi was developed after 1872. The Churamoan port was situated by the river Gamai and Laichhanpur port was situated by the river Kansbans. The port of Puri was established in 1860. It was mainly used from September to March.
