Deposit mobilisation is an essential aspect of banking. In today’s India, mobilising savings by robust deposit collection is observed as the most important activity of banking. Commercial banks’ primary purpose is to receive deposits. As a result, deposit mobilisation is one of the most fundamental developments in Indian banking today. Banking activities build-up the capital formation by mobilizing the deposits and savings, creation of credit, etc. that will improve economy and open the social development path of the country. Thus, in this paper, an effort is undertaken to analytically appraise the trend and performance of deposit of scheduled commercial banks in India with respect to selected public and private sector banks for last five years from 2015–2016 to 2019–2020. For the study, the researcher has collected secondary data from various sources like journals, financial reports, and internet sources subsequently. The researcher has used Trend Analysis and ANOVAs for analysis and interpretation of data. As the study focused on deposit performance of bank, the result reveals that all the Indian commercial banks deposit performance is rising consistently. However, the performance of private sector banks outperforms the Public sector banks in deposit growth. Among all the banks HDFC banks growth is the highest among all the banks as well as in private sector. Similarly, SBI performance is better in public sector. Public sector banks need to focus on deposit value as it is very important for bank’s liquidity, stability and perpetuity.
