Abstract

In the current era of hyperbolic transitions and ramifications, the roles played by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) has become more and more challenging and hence certain practices need to be undertaken and followed in such institutions to keep educational afloat as well as bring about a bewildering change in the society and environment. In this light, it is almost imperative to talk about Jesuit Higher Education Institutions who not only aim to provide education of the highest quality but also a 360-degree development among its students and contributing to the society by fostering environmental sustainability, thus, epitomizing the real spirit of being environmentally proactive. Over the past few years, St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata has not only perched itself as an institution of academic excellence but served as a means of promoting and propelling environmental sustainability. The present study is attempted at highlighting such practices and also proposing a framework for achieving environmental sustainability. For this purpose, the various environment-friendly practices undertaken and implemented by the hallowed institution has been highlighted and its relevance has also been explored. Besides, the present research study also deliberates on the current challenges faced by HEIs in the nexus of energy and water, the various practices that needs to be resorted to combat such challenges and the development of students of HEIs towards the accomplishment of individual and societal goals catering to the environment.
